Huck is the protagonist in the novel. He run’s away from his
dangerous father and joins Jim on a adventure down the Mississippi. Huck
is about 13 years old, with a clean appearance and the look of a
innocent young boy. Huck is very independent, smart, caring, and
thoughtful. He cares for others and sees clearly. He likes to help and
is adventurous. Huck helps Jim become free and realizes that Jim is a
good person. Huck is a moral person. He doesn’t steal or harm nobody. He
helped return the stolen money the King and Duke stole from the girls
which shows how good a person Huck is. Huck is very independent and does
not need adults.
Jim is Miss Watson slave. He run’s away from her in the beginning
of the novel and joins Huck on an adventure down the Mississippi. Jim
run’s away from Miss Watson because he overhears her talking about
selling him. Jim is a middle aged black man. His appearance is rough,
and unpleasant because he is a slave with very few clothes and
materials. Jim is very nice person. He’s compassionate, protective and
cares about Huck. He would do anything to help somebody out as he did
when he risked freedom and helped Tom Sawyer when he was shot. Jim is
very superstitious and childish at some times. But he also shows signs
of intelligence at some points of the novel. Jim acts as a father
figure to Huck on the journey down the Mississippi and shows that even
though he’s black, he’s just as good as any white person.
Tom Sawyer
Tom Sawyer is a friend of Huck’s who reunites with him at their stay
at Aunt Sally’s. He helps in freeing Jim. Tom is about the same age
as Huck (about 13). He is a well-rounded and a nicely dressed boy.
Physically, he is pleasant to look at. Tom seeks adventure and seems
very intelligent. He is very brave and wants to do things the hard
way. He is a natural leader. He takes pride in what he does and
likes to have fun. At some points in the novel, he doesn’t listen to
others opinion and seems self-centered. But he cares for his friends
and family and is an overall good kid.
Huck's Father (Pap)
Pap is Huck’s father. He doesn’t care about Huck but comes back to
town when he learns that Huck has a lot money. Huck’s father is a
drunk who looks like a he’s homeless. He’s very dirty, and has a
unpleasant appearance. Pap is a very greedy, angry, selfish and
irresponsible father. He does not care for Huck at all but only for
his money. He’s almost always drunk and very angry. He is corrupt
because he opposes the government and even school. Huck’s father wants
to be better than Huck himself.
